How to write a good Discord server description
4 min read · Updated
The short version
A good Discord server description says who the server is for and what happens there, in the first line. On OneBump it must have at least 50 characters, and can have up to 500 on Free or 1,000 with Premium. Be specific: “weekly Valorant tournaments” beats “fun gaming server”.
- Line 1: who it is for. Line 2: what happens there.
- Discord formatting and links work. Invites to other servers are removed.
- Type
/previewto see your advert before you bump.

What is the description?
The description is the text on your The card other servers see: your server’s name, description, member count and a Join button.. People scroll past an advert in about two seconds. The first line has to make them stop.
What should I write?
- Who it is for. “A server for Minecraft builders.”
- What happens there. “Weekly build battles, a survival world, and a showcase channel.”
- Why join now. “Season 4 starts on Friday.”

It could be any server. Nothing says who it is for.

- Discord formatting works. Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, headings, quotes, lists, spoilers, code, links, masked links and your server’s own emoji all show as they do in Discord. The table below shows the most used ones.
- No invites to other servers. An invite to any server but yours is removed, and a masked link to one keeps only its words. Your own invite link stays.
- No invite shorteners. Addresses such as dsc.gg or discord.me are refused. OneBump says: “Invite shorteners (like dsc.gg or discord.me) aren’t allowed. Your Join button already links to your server.”
- Nobody is pinged. Mentions and @everyone show, but notify nobody.
- Formatting does not hide words. Blocked words and the 18+ check read everything in your advert, including spoilers and the address behind a masked link.
