Who sees my advert? Categories, tags, matching
4 min read · Updated
The short version
Servers like yours see your advert first. OneBump compares your category, your tags and your description with other servers, and looks at your channel and role names too. The rest of your reach goes to other servers in turn, so every server gets seen.
- One category out of 24, and up to 5 tags.
- Tags change the order, never the number of servers reached.
- At least 20% of every bump goes to servers that have waited longest.

What is matching?
A Minecraft server’s advert works best in front of people who like Minecraft. Smart matching does that by itself. It uses three things you control: your category, your tags and your description.
It also looks at your server’s channel names, channel topics and role names. A #valorant-lfg channel says what a server is about even when its advert does not. Everyday names such as “general” or “rules” are left out, and these count for less than what you wrote yourself. The category you pick always wins.
In what order do servers get my advert?
- Same category and shared tags. The best matches go first.
- Same category.
- A related category, or a similar description. At most 25% of a bump.
- Everyone else, in turn. The servers that have waited longest for an advert. At least 20% of every bump goes this way, whatever the servers are about.
Between two equally good matches, the server that has waited longest goes first. If there are not enough matches, the rest of your reach is filled in turn. So you always get your full reach.
No tags? No problem.
You still reach 75% of the servers on OneBump (100% with Premium). Tags and categories change who gets your advert first, never how many.
Which categories are there?
There are 24. Pick the one closest to what your server is mainly about.

If you pick none, OneBump guesses one from your server’s name and description, and a little from its channel and role names. On the website you can also add a second category, for real mixes such as an anime art server.
How do I choose good tags?
- Use the name of the game, show, hobby or topic:
minecraft,valorant,study,art. - Be specific.
pokemon-gomatches better thangames. - A tag has 2 to 24 characters: letters a to z, numbers and dashes. At most 4 words.
- Empty words such as “server”, “best” or “free” are refused. They say nothing about your server.
- A few adult tags only work on servers marked 18+.
- Do not add tags that do not fit. They bring people who leave again, and misleading adverts get reported.
How do I set them?
- In Discord: type
/settingsin your server. A menu called “OneBump settings” opens. Only you can see it. Press Category & tags. Pick a category from the menu. Press Edit tags and type your tags with commas between them. - On the website: log in, press your server, then press the Settings tab. Choose under Category, type under Tags (press Enter after each one), and press Save changes.

🏷️ Category & tags
Servers like yours see your advert first. I work out which ones from your category and tags.
Category: 🎮 Gaming
Tags · game-nights, movie-nights, chill
Use the name of the game, show or hobby as a tag. “valorant” matches far better than “community”.

How do I see why an advert came to my server?
Press More under the advert. OneBump answers in one sentence, for example: “This advert was sent here because both servers are in the Gaming category and share the tag minecraft.” Read how to hide an advert, or see why you got it.
Can I turn matching off?
No. Matching is always on, for every server. It never makes your reach smaller: the most similar servers get your advert first, and the rest of your reach is filled with other servers in turn. The better your category and tags, the more of your adverts land with servers like yours.
What can go wrong?
- “Some tags were left out”. A tag broke one of the rules above. The message says which and why.
- I get adverts that do not fit. Check your category and tags. A guessed category can be wrong. And some adverts always arrive in turn, whatever they are about.
- The category is wrong. OneBump guessed it. After one of your first bumps it asks an admin in private whether the guess is right. Pick the right one and the guess is gone.
